Turtle Walk in Chennai

Turtle at Besant Nagar beach
On Saturday, the 24th of March, I went in Chennai to the Besant Nagar beach to witness the 'Turtle Walk.'
Airplane with sunset backround

We took a Toyota Innova to the beach around 5:00 pm. It was a long walk from the drop-off location to the beach area. At first, we saw very few turtles going in the water going one-by-one. Everyone took photos. I couldn't take many photos for a long time because my phone battery was at 10%.

The sunset was very nice too! I got a picture where an airplane was near the        sun. It looked fabulous!

These turtles were hatched by a group of people who help turtles. Soon later, they stopped the turtles from going in the water. They did that because if the released the turtles before getting dark, the crows can eat them.

We walked around the place for a bit and when it was dark, we saw the group coming out with a bucket. When they emptied the bucket, so many turtles came out and were walking towards the ocean. Some of the members were carrying torches to lead the turtles to the water as they are attracted to light.

While we were walking back after the 'Turtle Walk', there were so many crabs and I was screaming as I was so scared! Some were really small but some were huge! It was still an adventurous experience. Later we called a Mahindra Xylo to go home.

It was still a wonderful experience going for the 'Turtle Walk.'

PS - Special thanks to Jyoti mami for some of the photos.

  1. Nice article. Interesting to hear how people were volunteering to help the turtles hatch and survive. I also learnt from the article that you rode in an Innova and Xylo, and that you need to remember to charge your phone battery before you go out.
